The German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW) is a non-university research institution funded by the federal and state governments. It is based in Hanover and has a branch office in Berlin. The institute with its approximate 300 employees is a national and international competence centre for research about higher education and science systems. The scientific departments of the DZHW conduct knowledge- and problem-oriented research on current and long-term developments at all levels of the higher education and science system.

The BMBF-funded junior research group "New data, new knowledge? Infrastructures of Performance Measurement in Science", in cooperation with the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW), is investigating the technical infrastructures of scientific performance measurement and is looking into the question of how data collection and usage infrastructures shape what can be measured as scientific performance.

We are looking for, to join the junior research group at the Berlin office for an initial period of three years, a

PhD student (m/f/d) in the field of "Bibliometrics" (TVöD-E13, 65%)

You can expect a multifaceted, quantitative field of activity in the area of science studies in a multidisciplinary team in the environment of the German Competence Centre for Bibliometrics.

You will be jointly responsible for the conception of sophisticated, comparative Big Data analyses in bibliometrics and will carry out these analyses independently with the support of the junior research group. You will be in exchange with the qualitatively-oriented subproject at the BBAW and support it with your findings. For your doctoral work, you will pursue a topic that can be connected to the work of the junior research group.

In detail, your area of responsibility includes

  • Comparative analyses of different bibliometric databases
  • Analysis of different classifications
  • Meta-analyses via various bibliometric databases

Your qualifications and skills

  • You have completed a University degree (master/diploma) in a quantitative discipline such as statistics, data science or computer science OR have completed a degree in social sciences (diploma/master) and have a very high affinity for data and a strong knowledge of applied statistics
  • Good to very good knowledge in handling Big Data (e.g. ETL processes)
  • Good to very good knowledge of statistical data analysis (e.g. Spark, SQL, R, python)
  • Knowledge of Bibliometrics or motivation to acquire it
  • Knowledge in Science and Technology Studies or motivation to acquire it
  • Reliability, diligence and analytical creativity
